...contemporary, and somehow more technical than what I've heard about the mid-eighties Dead. There were strange, loose patterns followed by moments of uncertainty, although, I never felt lost or like the jam wasn't going somewhere. My approach to this (and other recordings as of late) was to find an adequately positioned show that features music I've heard myself a few dozen times, with mastered audio from concise lineage. Soundboard or Audience, it doesn't reaLLy matter. I've found one or two shows in seventy-six that sound incredible, made by GEMS/Miller with a Betty Board (1976-06-14 and the 24th). Not to get carried away, Keshavan's tape here sounds just as good but for different reasons. I won't get involved with each song, because I feel the overaLL (sum of its parts) tape is a beautiful example of how the band was played...

Subject: Best AUD's on the Archives

Are consistently the Rango Keshavan audience recordings -- especially with Charlie Miller's mastering. This recording is so unbelievably spectacular, it is, por moi', the quintessence of pure recorded sound.
Rango nails it again. This is impeccable sound.
And if the sound is good for us listening today then it was probably good for them hearing it on stage. Perhaps when a band like this can hear themselves properly they usually play with verve and innovation. This 2 hr, 16 minute effort is no exception.
Dare to say that if you were sitting in the perfect listening vantage in this venue that this recording would be an acutely accurate representation of the sound there that day.
